Five years ago, we developed our first ever Strategic Sports Plan, which set a clear direction for the future of sport in Newcastle. We’ve delivered on a lot of the actions from the 2020 plan, and now it’s time to review it.

Our Strategic Sports Plan continues to guide how we plan, prioritise and invest in sporting infrastructure. It outlines a shared vision and key priorities to ensure everyone, regardless of how they participate, can enjoy, access and thrive in our sporting and recreation spaces.

We are updating the Plan to ensure we respond to our community’s evolving needs with a robust framework for future planning, management and prioritisation of sporting infrastructure. This includes providing clear criteria and direction to support our growing population and our vibrant visitor economy.

The updated Plan will guide decision-making for sporting infrastructure across the Newcastle Local Government Area, helping to ensure a coordinated and sustainable approach. A key objective is to review existing facilities and improve their quality, accessibility and functionality.

Recently, we held a series of focus groups with key stakeholders including sporting associations, clubs, community user groups and health agencies, to discuss the scope of the Plan and gather feedback on the metrics shaping our decision-making.

Throughout this review, we aim to balance a wide range of community perspectives while considering social, environmental and technical constraints. We know the best outcomes are achieved when we work together.

The Plan will consider a range of options to manage the future of our sporting infrastructure, including opportunities for multiuse sporting facilities to meet growing demand and support a sustainable, climate-resilient future for Newcastle.
