Overview

Parkway Avenue is an important connecting route for schools, sportsgrounds, shopping centres and beaches.

We have received funding from the Australian Government Black Spot Program to deliver safety and active transport infrastructure improvements at two key roundabouts on Parkway Avenue.

These upgrades will improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers at the two roundabouts at National Park and Smith Streets, Hamilton South, near Newcastle High School.

The proposed changes will provide a comfortable, accessible and safe walking and cycling environment for people of all ages and abilities whilst improving inner-city cycling connectivity across Newcastle.

Improvements aim to slow vehicles approaching the roundabouts, creating a safer crossing environment at these busy intersections.

Key changes include:

  • Speed cushions on all roundabout approaches
  • Realignment of the kerb to narrow the lanes approaching the roundabouts
  • Roundabout extensions
  • Combined pedestrian-cyclist crossings and shared paths across the median.
