Cottage Creek Flood Maps

The study area is divided into four different areas. Below are a series of maps for Cottage Creek (area 3).

Note: the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) map is used to determine if your property is classified as 'flood affected.'

Cottage Creek 2007 Event Flood Map

This map shows our best estimation of the maximum flood depth from the recent 2007 Pasha Bulker flood. For residents who were living in Newcastle during this event, this map is helpful to provide context to how different this flood was compared to estimated flood depths during a 1% AEP event, 1% AEP event in 2050 and the PMF.

Cottage Creek 1% AEP Depths Flood Map

A 1% annual exceedance probability (AEP) flood represents a flood with 1% chance of occurring in any year. This is a large but rare flood. It was previously known as the 1 in 100-year flood. This map shows the maximum flood depth during a 1% AEP event.

Cottage Creek 1% AEP in 2050 Depths Flood Map

The 1% AEP in 2050 is when climate change impacts are starting to be experienced. In 2050, the climate change impacts that will influence flooding is an expected increase in rainfall and sea level rise of 0.4m from current levels. The 1% AEP in 2050 map shows an overall increase in flooding depths and impacts across the study area, particularly in low lying areas compared to the 1% AEP.

Cottage Creek Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) Map

The probable maximum flood (PMF) is the largest flood that could possibly occur. It is a very rare and improbable flood. There have been some historical floods in Australia that have approached the magnitude of a PMF. If your property is impacted by the PMF, as shown on this map, your property is classified as 'flood affected'. This map shows the maximum flood depth during a PMF event.

Cottage Creek PMF Hazard Map

This flood hazard map identifies locations where flood depth and speed of flood waters will have an impact on people, vehicles and buildings in the largest possible flood (PMF). Flood hazards range from H1 (generally safe conditions) to H6 (where flood waters in these locations are considered unsafe for people, and vehicles and building are considered vulnerable to failure).

Cottage Creek PMF Difference Map

This map shows the difference between the PMF extent in the previous 2008 flood model for this catchment, compared to the PMF extent in the 2022 flood model. The 2023 Throsby, Styx, and Cottage Creek Flood Study is based on a significantly improved flood model and understanding of flood behaviour, in comparison to previous studies undertaken in the Newcastle LGA.
