Planning ahead for upgrades to the Western Corridor
We're upgrading the road network within the western corridor to provide greater access for the communities of Wallsend, Minmi, Fletcher and Maryland. These upgrades which aim to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and support the growth of the western corridor, are being delivered in stages.
Detailed designs are currently being developed for the upgrade and widening of Minmi Road from Maryland Drive to west of the Summerhill Road roundabout, and Longworth Avenue. We plan to commence construction of these upgrades in early 2025.
To help improve traffic flow ahead of and during construction, we’re updating and making changes to some intersections in the surrounding areas. These changes aim to ease congestion, reduce bottlenecks, and increase safety for all road users while our works are underway. It is anticipated that access to Longworth Avenue will be impacted during the widening and upgrade of this road.
Approved changes
- Extension of the dual right turn lanes from Cameron Street into Minmi Road (northbound) to ease congestion from cars queueing.
- Improved access to the Wallsend Health Campus with the connection of Stapleton Street and Nash Street. Access Cameron Street from Nash Street will be for left-out movement only.
- An off-road cycleway will be installed on the southern side of Cameron Street in conjunction with a temporary on-road bi-directional cycleway along Stapleton Street, connecting to the existing off-road cycleway at Mordue Parade. This will enable temporary closure of the cycleway on the northern side of Cameron Street when the main construction works commence.
- Inclusion of a left turn slip lane for vehicles turning from Douglas Street (northbound) onto Cameron Street (westbound) using the existing parking lane.
- Adjustments for safety and traffic flow at the intersections of Stapleton Street and Douglas Street, and Tillie Street and Douglas Street.
- A temporary single lane roundabout at Cowper Street and Newcastle Road, providing improved access to Newcastle Road. Consultation for this roundabout was undertaken as part of the Wallsend Village Public Domain Plan (adopted by Council in 2018).
- Removal of the right hand turn restriction from Cowper Street (eastbound) into Longworth Avenue following community feedback on the proposal to widen and upgrade Longworth Avenue.
