Calling all budding photographers with a love for Newcastle's environment

We want to see how you value the Newcastle environment. Submit a photo, and you could win an eco adventure for you and a friend!

The competition is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in the Newcastle local government area. There are three separate categories including an open category, and primary school and secondary school categories.

Only one photo per person can be entered into the competition.

Winning photos will feature in the final Newcastle Environment Strategy.

Prizes

One prize will be awarded for each category.

Open Category: Win a two night escape for 2 x adults at a nearby luxurious eco cottage (or voucher towards a family stay) - valued at $780.

Primary School Category: Explore our breathtaking coastline with a 2.5 hour offshore adventure boat tour. Voucher for 1 x adult and 1 x child (up to 12 years) - valued at $226.

Secondary School Category: Explore our breathtaking coastline with a 2.5 hour offshore adventure boat tour. Voucher for 2 x adults (over 12 years) - valued at $252.

We have just released the draft Newcastle Environment Strategy, which provides a 10-year roadmap for achieving our vision of a sustainable Newcastle.

To help us achieve our vision of a sustainable Newcastle, we want to understand what you value most about the Newcastle environment.

1. Take the time to think about the subject of your photograph.

Your photo should show us how you value, connect with, or care for the Newcastle environment. The subject of your photograph could include anything from lazing in the grass in the sun, to a cultural or wellbeing connection you have with the land, or the way you care for the environment. Show us how you value the Newcastle environment.

2. The judges will be looking at:

The artistic merit of the photograph
How well the photograph and description demonstrate how the photographer values, connects with or cares for the Newcastle environment
The age of the participant (we appreciate there's a big difference in the expected level of skill from primary school aged participants through to the open category which is open to any age group).

3. Grab your camera and get creative.

4. Upload your entry. You will need to provide:

Your name
Parent/Guardian/Teacher name (if under 18 years old)
Your school (if you are a school student)
Your age
A brief description of your photo and how it shows what you value most about the Newcastle environment (<100 words)
Contact details.

Photos must be submitted in a jpg or png format and be a maximum of 10MB. Unfortunately, we can't accept entries that don't meet these criteria.

The photo can be portrait or landscape orientation.

All photos must be original work of the participant. Filters may be applied. Photos that have been taken by another photographer or generated by artificial intelligence will be deemed an invalid entry.

The judges will be looking at:

The artistic merit of the photograph
How well the photograph and description demonstrate how the photographer values, connects with or cares for the Newcastle environment
The age of the participant (we appreciate there's a big difference in the expected level of skill from primary school aged participants through to the open category which is open to any age group).
